Right selection guide: The best gold colour for your jewellery

We know from experience that choosing the perfect piece of jewellery can sometimes be a bit challenging. Especially if you're not sure which material is the best for you or the person you're gifting. White gold, rose gold or yellow gold? What are the differences? And how many carats should it have? We answer all these questions for you!

What is the origin of gold?

This precious metal is not a modern discovery, as many of you probably know or suspect. Gold has been with us for many thousands of years, but it hasn't always been associated with the jewellery industry. In Egyptian mythology, the Gods were believed to be made not of flesh but of gold. In Greek mythology, it was said that ichor (the blood of the Gods and immortals) was made of gold. Gold was already used as a means of payment and its softness made it easy to mint coins – the most famous being the ducat. It is also well known that gold has been used in medicine since ancient times. And of course, we must mention that gold has been used to create countless works of art and jewellery.

Gold is number one

In the jewellery industry, gold is definitely number one! Thanks to its characteristics, any skilled jeweller can turn it into beautiful necklaces, pendants, bracelets, earrings or rings. Gold engagement rings and gold wedding rings are the most popular choice, often more popular with customers than the rare but also very popular platinum.

Why choose gold jewellery?

  • It has been known since ancient times that gold is a symbol of richness and luxury. But nowadays it is not so much about social status. So why is gold jewellery so popular?

  • People often fall in love with gold jewellery at first sight because of its shining beauty.

  • Gold has also gained popularity because of its relatively wide price range.

  • It comes in a wide range of colours and can be worn by ladies and gentlemen.

MIALIS TIP: We are happy to make any piece for you in yellow, white and rose gold. Unlike other jewellers, the colour of the gold doesn't matter to the pricing, so the price is always the same and you don't have to pay extra!

  • Another advantage is its exceptional quality and hardness. Gold jewellery is durable and therefore suitable for everyday wear.

  • Gold jewellery is available with different carat counts.

What about carats?

A carat is a measure of the purity of gold. The number of carats makes it easy to determine the amount of gold in an alloy. 24 carat gold is raw gold. However, in this form it is too soft, easily deformed and not wearable, so it is not used in jewellery. More carats mean more gold in an alloy. So when you are choosing jewellery, remember that the saturation of the gold colour increases as the caratage increases. You can choose between 14kt and 18kt.

14 kt gold – is marked 585/1000 and contains 58.5% gold and 41.5% other metals, this form is popular for the best value for money

18 kt gold – is marked 750/1000 and contains 75% gold and 25% other impurities, this variety has a beautiful distinctive yellow or rose gold colour and is ideal for the demanding customers.

What about gold alloys?

As mentioned above, alloys are not the enemy. On the contrary, the addition of alloys allows jewellers to create beautiful and practical pieces that, with the right care, can last forever. What's more, raw gold is naturally yellow, so to achieve different colours, alloys have to be added to create the desired shade.

Yellow gold for the tradition lover

Are you a fan of yellow gold jewellery? This is the colour from which all the others originate and is therefore the oldest and most authentic. It is often popular with those who love tradition and prefer golden classics to the latest trends. Yellow gold is found in nature and is used to make popular shiny accessories, followed by metal alloying, where copper and zinc or silver are usually added to the gold. The higher proportion of copper gives gold jewellery a deep yellow hue. Adding more zinc or silver produces a softer yellow tone.

And who is the ideal wearer of yellow gold jewellery? Anyone who likes it, of course. But if you're choosing jewellery as a gift, you can also think about skin type – yellow gold looks wonderful on women and men with warmer skin tones.

Rose gold is loved by romantic souls

Rose gold is made by mixing pure gold with copper. The more copper in the alloy, the richer the rose gold, and believe us, all romantic souls find it hard to resist. But apart from the hearts of romantics, rose gold is also winning the hearts of many women and men who love trends. In fact, rose gold has enjoyed a huge boom in recent years!

Rose gold jewellery is so interesting that there is no need to experiment too much. If you like subtle variations, go for diamonds or pinkish morganites to bring out the delicacy of each piece. But if you're the brave type, don't be afraid to try new combinations – rose gold jewellery can be set with any gemstone! At Mialis, we love the contrast of rose gold paired with salt and pepper diamonds, and we're particularly proud of the unusual engagement ring Adira.

In terms of skin type, it's a neutral option as it contains both warm and cold tones. So that's a plus for you – because it definitely suits everyone. And when we say everyone, we also mean men. Recently, rose gold has become increasingly popular for men's wedding rings. If you've got your eye on them too, don't be afraid to go for a rose. You can also choose a shiny or matte surface, the latter being the most popular with men and looking very handsome on men!

The elegance of white gold

This metal was the most loved by customers in recent years. Today, it is no longer the top choice, but its popularity is still very high. This is due to its pure and timeless elegance! Jewellers add zinc, nickel silver and sometimes palladium to raw gold to give the jewellery a beautiful silver colour. Of course, raw white gold has a warmer hue.

To make the colour really cold silver, it is necessary to use the rhodium plating process, in which the jewellery is coated with rhodium. Rhodium is one of the chemical elements and a layer of this metal gives the white gold the right icy hue and extra lustre. However, rhodium has one drawback – it is not everlasting. Over time, the plating wears off and it is recommended that the process be repeated. At our studio we pride ourselves on quality, so we cover our jewellery with a thick layer of rhodium to make it last as long as possible. What's more, you don't have to worry about the extra cost; our jewellery shop offers free rhodium plating every six months, which greatly extends the life of your favourite pieces.

MIALIS TIP: If you are a fan of natural white gold, we are happy to create your dream pieces in its raw form.

Who looks best in white gold jewellery? According to the colour typology, it's more likely to brighten up light or pink skin tones. But we think that if you like white gold and feel confident wearing it, you'll look chic no matter the type.

The hallmark of quality

You've probably heard the term "hallmark" – it's the mark given to products, in this case jewellery, made from a variety of precious metals. But this mark cannot be stamped on jewellery by just anyone. Only government institutions have the ability to hallmark, in our case the Assay Office, where they carefully check that the jewellery meets the quality of the composition of the metal in question. If the jewellery passes this test, it is hallmarked.

In the case of gold, this symbol represents the number of carats. So whether you are buying a white gold ring, rose gold necklace or yellow gold earrings, each piece should be marked with the carat number. The colour of the gold doesn't matter. If you have two 18kt gold rings of different colours, they should have the same hallmark. We are registered with the Assay Office. Every piece of jewellery we make is hallmarked. You can therefore be sure that all the products that come out of our studio are made of real gold.

How do you layer and combine gold jewellery?

We'd love to give you a universal rule for combining jewellery, but unfortunately there isn't one. The days of combining only one colour of gold are long gone, as are the days of wearing only one necklace, one pair of earrings and one bracelet at a time. So you have a free hand when it comes to choosing the jewellery that will complete your outfit. Just remember enough is enough, but don't be afraid to let your imagination run wild and turn an ordinary look into a unique style. Try layering necklaces of different lengths, wear several bracelets at once or go crazy with several earrings in one ear. The sky's the limit!
