Moonstone in all its shiny beauty

Delicacy, sparkle, magical powers, endless symbolism and interesting legends from many cultures. All this is associated with the enchanting moonstone. Haven't you heard of it? Find out what moonstone is and how it differs from other gemstones. It's hard to resist its charms, and as you learn more about it, you may find you can't resist it at all!

What is moonstone?

Moonstone is a beautiful mineral belonging to the feldspar group. Its appearance and characteristic luminescence are reminiscent of the surface of the moon, from which it takes its name. Sometimes it is also known as adularia, which comes from the Adul Alps in Switzerland, where it was discovered. At first glance it may appear to be an ordinary stone with a pearl surface, but the moment the light touches it, it becomes unmistakable. No wonder moonstone jewellery is so popular.

This unique mineral is known for a characteristic phenomenon called adularescence. What does this mean? When light hits the moonstone, a subtle milky haze forms around it. It looks as if tiny beams of light (sometimes even iridescent) are shining from the gemstone. This phenomenon is caused by the different refractive index of the metal inclusions and chemical compounds in the moonstone.

Where the magical gemstone comes from

If you're wondering where moonstone comes from, it can be found in many parts of the world. Of course, the mines in the Swiss Alps mentioned above are significant. But the most beautiful and rare pieces come from Sri Lanka and India

A gemstone of legend and symbolism

Moonstone has fascinated our ancestors from many cultures for thousands of years. Perhaps that is why it is associated with so many myths and legends like no other gemstone. The Hindus believed that the cosmic power of the moon was trapped inside the stone, and the now well-known adularescence was thought to represent the moon's glow. Tradition also held that the stone could foretell the future, but only to those who held it in their mouths throughout the night of the full moon.

The ancient Greeks associated moonstone with the goddesses Artemis, Selene and Hecate, and hoped it would bring them good harvests, luck and fertility. The ancient Romans believed that the stone was formed by the moonbeams.

Some Arabian cultures also believed it had a positive effect on women's fertility, so much so that women wore it between their underwear. The ancient inhabitants of the Orient, on the other hand, believed that the characteristic luminescence was due to a living spirit trapped inside the stone.

Moonstone was believed to have the power to cleanse the number thirteen of negative influences, so it was often given as a thirteenth wedding anniversary gift. Other traditions say that it was only worn on Mondays, or that it was used against insomnia

There are many myths and legends. But there is also an interesting fact from the recent past. Moonstone became the official state stone of Florida on 20 July 1970 in honour of the Apollo 11 landing.

What is the meaning of moonstone?

Many people have fallen in love with moonstone, not only for its stunning beauty, but also for its magical qualities. It is said to help its owner connect with their soul and listen to their intuition. It is also often used for fortune telling. It also symbolises pure love and peace of mind, and is said to improve relationships and increase fertility. The stone is generally thought to have the power to enhance femininity and is associated with passion and love

The official stone of June has the greatest effect on water signs. But it can also bring a gentle and positive energy to Virgo, Libra and other signs. It is said to bring creativity and harmony to Pisces, to help Capricorns resolve differences between partners, and to help Cancers find inner balance.

Stunning moonstone jewellery

Moonstone is different from all other gemstones! It has many shades, from colourless to smoky blue to a soft peach, but when light hits it, it literally lights up. That's why jewellers have always loved it. In addition, its natural origin and affordability make it a very popular gemstone for original jewellery for almost any occasion.

Its delicate appearance makes it ideal for weddings. So if you are looking for a beautiful bride jewellery, a moonstone necklace will make the perfect wedding jewellery. It will look really perfect with a white dress! But at the same time it can also be used as a witness jewellery. Such subtle moonstone earrings could be the right choice.

Any woman who appreciates tenderness and delicacy will love a moonstone ring. You can use this unique jewellery as a birthday present or an anniversary gift (for example, the mentioned 13th).

MIALIS TIP: Although moonstones may call for an engagement, a moonstone ring is not the ideal choice. We recommend choosing a gemstone with a higher hardness. You will find many in our engagement ring collection!
