Jewellery engraving: everything you need to know
Engraving is a beautiful way to add a unique personal touch to your accessories. Whether you want to personalise your new jewel with a name, an important date, or a special symbol, it will become an extraordinary and unforgettable keepsake. Let's take a look at what jewellery engraving is, why it is so popular, and how it works at our Mialis jewellery studio.
What is engraving?
Engraving is a technique that can be used to etch any pattern, text or symbol into the surface of a variety of materials. It is often used in jewellery making.
Types of engraving
Laser engraving
This is a highly modern method that uses a beam of light to create fine patterns on various materials. This makes it possible to achieve precise detail every time. And that's exactly why we use this technology too. It allows us to capture every detail with absolute precision, even on the smallest surfaces and with more complex motifs, where every millimetre counts.
Hand engraving
A traditional method that is the most time-consuming for the creator and the most expensive for the customer.
Machine engraving
This option is ideal for larger volumes and mass production.
Why is engraved jewellery so popular?
Are you planning to buy wedding rings, or do you want to surprise a loved one with a personal gift that will really touch their heart? Gold jewellery will always be a great choice. But to make it extra special, you can add a touch of uniqueness with engraving.
Thanks to laser engraving, your jewellery will carry a piece of your story. Engraving helps to express love, loyalty and memories through a small but significant detail. And believe us, such a personalised piece of jewellery will always win the heart of its new owner.
Jewellery engraving at Mialis
If you're planning to purchase a unique piece of jewellery and have any questions about engraving, you've come to the right place. In this section, you'll find everything you need to know.
What can we engrave?
It depends on your creativity and requirements. We have no limits when it comes to imagination, and if it's technically possible, we can engrave pretty much anything you want on your gold jewellery.
The biggest demand is for text
From names, initials and monograms, to significant dates, nicknames or quotes. What you choose is entirely up to you. You can choose from our verified fonts. We are also happy to accommodate other freely available fonts that are not subject to special rights. Please note that in this case, the complexity and therefore the price will be assessed individually.
In addition to text, we can also transfer small symbols onto your jewellery
Hearts, hobby-related elements, celestial signs or any other simple graphic. Again, this depends on the complexity. The surcharge depends on whether it is a classic vector graphic or something more special.
And then there's also our favourite, unconventional engraving
We can create a bespoke piece of jewellery in our studio to your liking. It could be decorated with a QR code or your own signature, for example. Or how about a "Lord of the Rings" style ring? With your help, we can also create jewellery with a fingerprint. This works by colouring the desired finger (e.g. with a marker) and pressing it onto paper. We then scan it, convert it into digital form and voilà, transfer an identical fingerprint onto the jewellery. So if you're looking for a truly one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery, don't hesitate to contact us – we'd be delighted to turn your wishes into reality.
How long does engraving take?
The standard timeframe is 7 working days. Depending on your individual requirements, however, the wait for your dream piece of jewellery may be even shorter.
Which pieces of jewellery do we engrave?
Wedding rings
We most often encounter engraving on wedding rings. These are pieces of jewellery with extraordinary meaning, which is why our customers like to add personal details to them, making them unique. Messages, dates, or even the GPS coordinates of where they met, all emphasise the uniqueness of the future newlyweds.
At Mialis, we offer a choice of Cambria, Montez, Monotype Corsiva, Niconne and Segoe Script fonts. These include both serif and more elegant fonts. Engraving text in these five fonts is free of charge for wedding rings. If you are interested in a different font that is freely available and not subject to copyright, we can also engrave it. In this case, the price depends on the complexity of the chosen font.
The ordering process is simple:
- When selecting your wedding rings, simply check the "Engraving" option in the relevant field
- Enter the required text.
Rings, bracelets and pendants
In addition to wedding rings, we also offer engraving on other types of jewellery. Engraving on engagement rings or classic rings is done for an extra charge and depends on the width of the ring and whether it is set with stones. If there is enough space on the ring, it is no problem to add, for example, the date of engagement or a monogram.
Another popular option is personalised necklaces and bracelets. This depends on the specific design and the available space for engraving. We can engrave anything you want on them. If you have a specific idea, we would be happy to create a custom piece of jewellery for you. Such unique pieces of jewellery are a perfect choice for a gift, for example.
What is the maximum number of characters?
This depends on the type of jewellery. Pendants and bracelets vary greatly in text length. For rings, size is the most important factor. However, to ensure the text fits even on the smallest women's ring, it should contain a maximum of 40 characters.
What is the minimum width of rings for legible engraving?
For the best results, we recommend engraving on a ring with a width of at least 2.5 mm. Engraving is still possible on rings with a width of 2 mm, but in this case we only use the Cambria font, which ensures good legibility even on such a small surface.
Can jewellery be engraved at a later date?
Yes, subsequent engraving is common practice for us. So, for example, if you want to have the wedding date engraved on your wedding rings, but you don't know the exact date at the time you buy the rings, we can engrave them at a later date without any problems.
Is engraving free of charge?
We personalise wedding rings and pendants or bracelets that are originally designed with engraving free of charge (when choosing from the fonts mentioned above). Other jewellery and other fonts or more complex symbols are subject to an additional charge depending on the complexity.
Can engraved jewellery be resized?
For most engraved jewellery, subsequent adjustments such as resizing are not possible. This could disrupt the appearance of the engraving. However, our jewellers always need to assess each piece of jewellery individually, and exceptions can certainly be found.
How to care for engraved jewellery?
To keep engraved jewellery beautiful for many years, it is important to give it the proper care. We recommend regular cleaning. Simply rinse it under water with dish soap and then wipe and polish it with a soft cloth, ideally microfibre.
TIP MIALIS: In addition to home care, remember to have your jewellery professionally cleaned regularly. We offer this service once a year, completely free of charge!
