Everything you need to know about rhodium before buying rhodium-plated jewelry
Are you looking for jewelry that will sparkle from afar, but also be durable? Then we are happy to introduce rhodium, a silvery-white, extremely rare metal whose popularity continues to grow. It is used in the surface treatment of silver and white gold jewelry, giving it extraordinary beauty and durability. Join us to find out everything there is to know about rhodium. You may be surprised by its history, appearance, and properties, and you will fall in love with rhodium plating just like we did! Rhodium is a very rare metal that belongs to the group of light platinum metals, such as palladium, ruthenium, osmium, and iridium. It occurs very rarely in nature and only in its pure form in the company of other precious metals. It is formed by geological processes deep in the Earth's crust.

It is notable not only for its hardness, but also for its high resistance to corrosion. Furthermore, it does not oxidize or tarnish, which is considered a great advantage in jewelry making. This is why rhodium is mainly used for the surface treatment of jewelry. Its mirror-like, silvery-white luster is unique and gives jewelry a delicate, elegant shine that lasts for many years. But don't be fooled, there is also black rhodium, which you can find, for example, on our black wedding rings. And thanks to its beauty and unique physical properties, it is an invaluable raw material in modern jewelry.
Where did it come from?
Rhodium was discovered in 1803 by British chemist William Hyde Wollaston (a year after he discovered palladium), who, while studying platinum, discovered a metal with a bright pinkish-silver luster. Wollaston named it after the Greek word "rhodon", meaning rose, because of the delicate pink hues of rhodium compounds. Since its discovery, rhodium has quickly gained a place among the most valuable materials for jewelers and industry, thanks to its rarity, hardness, and unique physical properties.
The most significant deposits of rhodium are found today in South Africa, which accounts for most of the world's production, followed by Russia in the Ural Mountains, South America, and as an impurity in nickel ores in Canada.
Why and how rhodium plating transforms any gold jewelry?
Are you wondering what rhodium plating is? It is an antioxidant surface treatment for silver and white gold jewelry. It involves several precise steps that transform any piece into a jewel with a perfect cool shine or an original mysterious look. First, the jewelry is thoroughly cleaned. All impurities and small traces of grease are removed so that the rhodium can adhere evenly. It is then immersed in a special solution containing ions of this precious metal. An electric current is used to attach a smooth layer to the surface. It is usually thin, between 0.1 and 0.5 microns, yet very durable. It changes the appearance of the jewelry and at the same time provides it with a "protective shield" that prevents the base from oxidizing and darkening, making it hypoallergenic and resistant to damage. The more layers, the better. At Mialis, we strive to coat our jewelry very carefully and generously so that it will last as long as possible.

White rhodium as a symbol of purity, elegance, and timeless beauty
Even white gold has a naturally warmer shade, which can sometimes appear slightly yellowish. To give the jewelry a truly icy silver color, a generous layer of white rhodium is applied. This unifies the shade of the entire piece, giving it a chic look and highlighting the sparkle of the gemstones.
White rhodium thus rightly symbolizes purity, simple elegance, and timeless beauty. Its delicate, mirror-like shine is luxurious but not ostentatious. It is perfect for women who love subtle details and want their accessories to shine as brightly as they did on the day they first received them. However, white rhodium jewelry also suits men, especially those who are looking for understated minimalism, for example in their wedding rings. Thanks to its durability, it is ideal for everyday wear and retains its charm for many years, regardless of time or fashion trends.
TIP MIALIS: All of our white gold jewelry is automatically coated with rhodium. If you would like your piece without rhodium in its natural tones, please include this information in the comments when ordering online.

Black rhodium for mysterious originality with character
Have you ever heard of black gold? Well, we're probably going to surprise you, but there's no such thing. So-called "black gold" simply does not exist in nature and is created by applying a layer of black rhodium to the surface of jewelry during the rhodium plating process. In addition to classic white, there is also a dark version. Black rhodium gives jewelry a deep, mystical shade with a subtle metallic sheen. We also discussed this topic in detail in our next blog article.
In recent years, black rhodium has become a significant trend, especially for unconventional wedding rings. More and more couples are choosing these original pieces of jewelry to confirm their love with jewelry that stands out from the crowd. Black wedding rings look modern and elegant, and at the same time, they simply set you apart from other engaged couples. They are perfect for bolder owners who are not afraid to express their personality.
They are also perfect for unconventional themed weddings, such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or for future newlyweds planning an original black wedding. Black rhodium simply adds a unique character to your jewelry and big moments.
TIP MIALIS: Any color of gold can be hidden under black rhodium, not just white. So if you prefer rose or yellow gold, don't forget to choose your favorite color for free in our online selector.

Is rhodium permanent?
Although rhodium is very durable, the coating on jewelry does not last forever. Over time, it naturally thins and may lose its original shine or color. However, this does not mean that something has happened to the jewelry, only that the surface layer has worn away slightly. Simply restore it and the jewelry will be like new again. At the same time, you can let the patina stand out, which gives the jewelry its uniqueness.
TIP MIALIS: At our Mialis studio, we offer free rhodium plating restoration once a year to keep your accessories looking beautiful for years to come. It's not just about appearance, but also a small step towards sustainability, because quality jewelry deserves care, not replacement.
