Sapphire: The perfect gemstone for unique engagement rings

Sapphire is one of the most beautiful and desirable gemstones ever. It is especially famous for its blue colour, but it also comes in many other colours that are increasingly popular for their originality. Join us to find out why this gemstone has won the heart of Princess Diana. Maybe you will fall in love with it too and soon your jewellery box will be filled with sapphire jewellery – maybe even those in unusual colours and shapes from our studio.

What is sapphire?

Sapphire is a mineral that belongs to the corundum group. Its name is derived from the Latin sapphirus (from the Greek σάπφειρος, sappheiros), which could generally be translated as "gemstone". The best known is the blue sapphire, which has its colouring due to the addition of iron. But there are many other colours besides.

At the Jewellery Atelier Mialis, we specialise in jewellery with sapphire in extraordinary colours. You will of course find blue classics here, but there is also pink sapphires, green, teal, violet or trendy peach. And what's more? We are (so far) the only ones in the country who offer these unconventionally coloured gems in atypical shapes, which always underline the uniqueness of such special jewellery.

In addition to natural sapphires, there is also an option for those who are concerned about sustainability. This is an ethical luxury in the form of laboratory sapphires. With this perfect alternative, you can treat your dear one or yourself to a perfect piece of jewellery without compromising.

TIP MIALIS: You can find lab grown sapphires here, especially among engagement rings. A popular choice is the gold ring with lab-grown sapphire KODA.

The origin of sapphires

The sapphire has been known and valued for centuries. It is found in many parts of the world. Some of the most important historical sites include Kashmir, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. The Sapphires of Kashmir are prized for their exceptional colour, followed by the sapphires of Myanmar and Sri Lanka. In the Czech Republic, an important sapphire site was at Mala Jizerska Meadow in the Jizera Mountains. At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, this site was one of the most important in Europe

Nowadays, the main sapphire deposits are in countries such as Australia, Thailand, Madagascar and Laos. In these areas, beautiful blue sapphires are found, often with undertones of brown or green. And would you know where raw sapphires are processed? Interestingly, this process can either take place at the site of the discovery, or the finds are sent to India, where most of the world's sapphires (and gemstones in general) are cut.

Magical effects of sapphire

In both traditional and modern terms, sapphire has a number of positive effects. Many people believe that this gemstone promotes a calm mind, improves concentration and brings balance. Sapphire is also said to aid in spiritual growth and protect the wearer from negative influences. It is considered the gemstone of the month of September. And it is said to have the strongest effects on people born under the signs of Taurus and Virgo, so it can be great for them as a birthday gift, for example. But if that's really the case, you'll have to try it for yourself.

The history and legends of sapphire

There is a deeper symbolism that our ancestors attributed to the sapphire. The ancient Persians believed that the Earth rested on a huge sapphire throne whose reflection gave the heavens their blue colour. In Christianity, the sapphire was associated with purity and spiritual truth – priests wore sapphire rings as a symbol of celestial power and divine connection. In Indian and Persian cultures, it was again considered a stone of wisdom, promoting spiritual growth and providing the wearer with clarity of thought. It was also previously believed that the sapphire would turn black if worn by someone dishonest.

According to one of many other legends, the sapphire is a drop of water from the cup of immortality. Traditionally, it was attributed with the ability to cure various eye diseases, insomnia, heart disease and kidney disease. One story also says that sapphires had protective powers against misfortune and betrayal. In some cultures, the sapphire was considered a stone that brings happiness and harmony to relationships, and is therefore often chosen for proposals. Demand for engagement rings was also boosted by Princess Diana's proposal to Prince Charles, who presented her with a vintage-style blue sapphire engagement ring.

Sapphire is the ideal choice for a wide range of jewellery for all kinds of events. But since we mentioned that momentous love moment above, we have a recommendation for you. But apart from these, we also have symmetrical sapphires cut into regular atypical shapes such as pear, baguette, tapered baguette, kite, oval, hexagon, marquise, emerald, cushion and asscher. We are particularly proud of this collection and believe you will find exactly the ring that reflects your fiancée's personality and style!

Although the rings in our sapphire jewellery collection are clearly the standout, there are also sapphire earrings that are suitable for day and evening wear. We must not forget the blue sapphire cluster pendant. It will add elegance to any outfit. You just need to combine it correctly.

TIP MIALIS: If you don't find the piece you are looking for in our collection of sapphire jewellery, we will be happy to make you custom jewellery exactly to your liking. At the same time, our sapphire family is constantly growing, so be sure to keep an eye on it. Maybe soon we will add one that will win your heart.

How to care for sapphire jewellery properly?

Whether you choose an engagement ring, unique earrings or a gold pendant, it's important to care for it. This is the only way it will keep the jewellery looking  like new for many years. We recommend cleaning it regularly with a soft cloth and being careful of mechanical handling that could damage the gemstone. The sapphire is very hard, reaching number 9 on the Mohs hardness scale. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to protect it and to take care when wearing it.

TIP MIALIS: In addition to home care, sapphire jewellery, like all other jewellery, requires professional cleaning. At Mialis it's free once a year, so be sure to take advantage of it so your jewelry can keep you in beautiful company forever.
