How much should you spend on an engagement ring?
What should be the price of an engagement ring? This is exactly the question that almost everyone who is planning a proposal asks themselves. But is there a universal answer? What is the minimum or maximum value? That's what you will find out in this article! You may have heard somewhere that an engagement ring should cost at least two months' salary. This statement has its roots in a sophisticated marketing strategy from the 1930s, launched by the US diamond company De Beers. The aim was clear – to increase sales of diamond rings. At first it was one month's salary, in the 1980s the amount was changed to two months' salary, and in the Japanese market even the ideal price for an engagement ring was to be three months' salary. And amazingly, it worked. The 2–3 salary rule caught on and spread worldwide. Jewellery sellers, of course, find such a claim convenient. But engagements are not about price, they're about love.
