Emerald: The gemstone that enchanted monarchs with its mysterious green hues

Looking for the right gemstone for your jewellery? How about an emerald? This stone is characterised by its unique deep green colour, which has been favoured by many rulers. Popular for thousands of years, emeralds symbolise beauty, wisdom, balance and love. Want to know what powers this precious gemstone has and why you should get emerald jewellery? Read on for all the answers!

What is an emerald?

An emerald is a rare mineral that represents the most precious and valuable variety of beryl. It has a characteristic deep green colour, the intensity of which is influenced by the amount of vanadium and chromium. The more of these two elements it contains, the stronger the colour. In the past, emeralds also held a place of honour among the upper classes, adorning truly precious jewels such as the Crown of the King of the Andes, the Hooker Emerald Brooch or the Spanish Inquisition necklace. The emerald was also one of Queen Cleopatra's favourite gems (note: some historians now believe that these were not emeralds but peridots, which can not be 100% confirmed or refuted).

Origin and history of green gemstones

Emeralds are formed under specific geological conditions and are usually found in metamorphic (as a result of high temperatures, pressures and chemical environments in the Earth's crust) and igneous rocks.

The most famous emerald deposits are found in Colombia, which has been a major source of the finest and most valuable stones for centuries. Other major sources of emeralds include Zambia, Brazil, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe. The colour of an emerald can vary slightly depending on the deposit. Colombian emeralds are known for their clear and intense green, while Zambian emeralds, for example, often have a blue hue.

Symbolism and uses

The deep green gemstone is said to have many supernatural powers. It is said to help with communication and truthfulness. It can deepen faith and create harmony in life. Emeralds also reduce stress. They are said to work well as talismans, bringing good luck to their owners. In many cultures it is a stone of fertility and love.

Its green colour can evoke spring, so it is easy to remember that it is associated with the month of May. It has the strongest effect on people born under the signs of Taurus and Cancer. It is often given on the 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries.

Myths and legends

The emerald's current popularity is due in part to the many myths and legends surrounding it. Between 3000 and 1500 BC, there were emerald mines around the Red Sea, which, according to legend, belonged to the Egyptian Pharaohs and are still called Cleopatra's Mines, and some of their remains have been saved. At that time, emeralds were a symbol of power and the Egyptians believed they guaranteed eternal life. In the past, the stone was thought to bring prosperity and wisdom. In the Middle Ages it was used by alchemists and fortune tellers. Buddha statues were also carved from this gemstone.

How to wear emerald jewellery?

Although emerald is between 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness, it is quite fragile. It is therefore more suitable for occasional wear. Sapphire, moissanite or diamond jewellery is recommended for the everyday wear expected of wedding and engagement rings.

However, their distinctive and very unique colour makes them a great choice for evening events, for example. Imagine wearing your favourite evening gown with emerald-coloured jewellery – the look is sure to attract admiring glances. At the same time, they can also complement a dainty daytime outfit. Pair them with a simple white shirt or a light blazer, and they will really stand out!

How to care for emerald jewellery?

Whether you have a ring, earrings or necklace set with emeralds in your jewellery box, it is important to take care of it. Luxury jewellery can last forever if treated properly! Always place your jewellery away from other jewellery to avoid scratching the gemstones. Emeralds are also sensitive to sudden changes in temperature, so keep them out of hot water. And clean your jewellery regularly at home – just water, mild detergent and a soft cloth will do.
