Take off jewellery for work and sport

We totally understand that you want to have your favourite pieces on you all the time. But this can often cause more harm than good. Try to make putting on jewellery almost the last thing you do when you leave the house. And when you get back, take them off first. In this way, you avoid the fact that you could spray perfume or hairspray on them, which has a negative effect on the jewellery. It is also important that you take them off before going to bed. Try to follow this rule and you will have less to worry about.

Avoid contact with cleaning products agents

Even seemingly innocuous routine cleaning can take a toll on any accessories. A wire brush with kitchen sand will help you easily remove even coarse dirt, but it will also easily scratch the surface of your favourite rings. On the other hand, some detergents can irreversibly damage gemstones. In general, however, any cleaning products promote oxidation, so you could soon notice unwanted colour changes or perhaps a loss of shine on your accessories. To be safe, always remove your jewellery before cleaning.

Jewellery does not belong in water

And this applies to both bathing and showering. Whether it is regular water or seawater, it is simply not good for jewellery. Even chlorinated water can cause a lot of trouble, so don't put on your favourite pieces until after swimming. Think about it and make taking off your jewellery a habit. You will see that after a few weeks, it will definitely no longer happen to you that you only remember in the shower that you are still wearing the necklace, for example.

High temperatures do no good

Prolonged exposure to the sun, hot water and temperature changes can cause damage. Gemstone jewellery is more susceptible than others. These can be more sensitive and high temperatures can change the colour of the gems in extreme cases.

Find a safe place for your jewellery

At this point, we don't mean a vault, but rather a safe place to store your treasures. If you are forced to take off your jewellery during the day (and now you know that you probably will), definitely don't think about your wallet or key pockets, etc. Jewellery is easily scratched by other metals and could become deformed in a small space. If you don't have anything better, wrap each piece separately in a tissue where they won't be in any great danger.

Whichever form of storage you choose, it is important to keep the jewellery out of the reach of daylight, in a dry place and on a soft surface. Each piece should have enough of its own space and should not touch other jewellery.

Clean, clean and clean

Just like you take care of your hair, skin and nails, accessories also need a lot of care. Ideally, jewellery should be cleaned after each wear. Don't worry, this kind of cleaning won't take much time. Simply wipe each piece with a soft cloth to remove any dirt, such as sweat, grease, or pollen that has accumulated on them throughout the day. Your jewellery will shine beautifully and you will shine with it even after months of wearing it.

MIALIS TIP: Once in a while you can also try a home cleansing bath. Put a drop of dish soap in a bowl of water, add lukewarm water and a ball of aluminium foil. Place the jewellery in the bath prepared in this way, which you take out after 30 minutes and dry with a soft cloth. You will see your favourite pieces shine again!

Home cleaning is essential, but to keep your jewellery looking like new for years to come, it is best to let the professionals take care of it from time to time. They can provide the kind of gentle, deep cleaning that you may not be able to do at home.
