The best ways to measure a ring

If you are reading this article, your goal is clear – to choose the right ring size. If you are buying a sparkling ring for yourself, or if the person you are giving it to knows the right size, you have an advantage. But if you want to keep the secret, prepare yourself for a spying challenge. We'll give you our tips on how to get this job done.

How to measure the ring size at home?

Measuring the finger with a string

A string, a paper strip or a special paper ring ruler are the best tools for this method. So choose one and get started!

  • Wrap one of the tools lightly around the finger you want to wear the jewellery on.
  • Make a mark where the string or paper crosses – so that it is on both parts.
  • Then simply measure how far apart the marks are and you will have the size of the jewellery in millimetres.

TIP: You can also use a special paper tape measure. Just fill in the form below and we will send it to you!

Trace the ring

If you have a ring that is guaranteed to fit the future wearer's hand, you can use it to determine the exact size.

  • Take the ring, paper and a sharp pencil.
  • Draw the inner circumference of the ring on the paper.
  • Measure the diameter of the circle you have drawn on the paper or bring the picture to our jewellery shop.

Measuring rings as a top secret mission

Do you want to surprise your loved one with an engagement ring, or are you looking for the perfect piece of jewellery to give as a gift? You need to be careful when you are trying to find the right one. But don't worry, there are a few discreet ways to find out her ring size without giving anything away.

Take a look at her jewellery collection and visit a jewellery store

If you're trying to buy a gift for a woman who has a full jewellery box at home, you're already halfway there.

  • Find out where she wears her jewellery.
  • Secretly borrow a ring from her jewellery box.
  • Make an appointment at our jewellery store in Prague and arrive with the ring.
  • The jeweller will then place her favourite piece on the mandrel and measure the exact size.

Borrow a ring from the jewellery box and feel free to measure it at home

You don't have time, jewellers are out of the way, you prefer to shop online or you're just worried that your loved one might notice that her favourite ring is missing? In that case, explore the jewellery box and start to measure by yourself.

  • Measure rings inside diameter.
  • It is important that you measure the widest part, the diameter of the circle.
  • Note the value in millimetres.
  • When the ring of your choice catches your eye, choose the right size based on the diameter of the circle you have measured.

Photos as a great indicia

Are you insecure about her size and worried that you won't be accurate enough? Look in your loved one's jewellery box and find a ring that you are sure she is still wearing.

  • Place a transparent ruler on the ring.
  • Take a photo of the jewellery with the ruler and send it to us.
  • We'll do the rest.

Try on the ring

If you have access to your wife's jewellery box, you can do your own ring fitting. There are even two ways.

  1. On any finger
    • Put the ring on your own finger.
    • Don't force it all the way to the base of your finger. Try it on in a position that is comfortable for you.
    • Use a marker to make a dot under the ring and go to the jewellery store to try the chosen piece on the same finger again.
    • If you've threaded the ring just above the dot and it feels just right, you've got the right size.
  2. On the little finger
    • Try the ring on your little finger.
    • If it fits well, we can measure your finger size and choose a women's ring.
    • Men's little fingers are usually similar in size to women's ring fingers.

When she falls asleep, measure her finger

This could be your chance if you like adrenaline or if none of the above methods have worked for you.

  • Prepare all the necessary tools, wait until your partner falls asleep, find the courage and get started.
  • You will need a piece of paper or string.
  • When you're sure your loved one sleeps, Take a length of string and wrap it around the base of her finger.
  • It should touch her skin, but not be too tight.
  • Mark where the end crosses over with the rest of the string.
  • Once you've done that, the hard part is over.
  • Finally, measure how many millimetres is the distance from the end to the marked point with a ruler.
  • Now you have an accurate finger size to help you choose the perfect piece of jewellery.

TIP: You can also use a special paper tape measure. Just fill in the form below and we will send it to you!

Ring size chart

Ring sizes can be a problem for many customers. But if you know the basics, it will be easier for you to get the right one. There are many different ways of sizing rings around the world. The British mark rings with letters, while the US uses lower units of numbers. We at Mialis use the European size markings, which refer to the millimetre width of the inner edges of the ring. These are numbered from 46 (14.6mm diameter) to 65 (20.7mm diameter). The most commonly purchased sizes for women's rings are 52 and 53, while for men it is 59 to 61.

Some tips to help you choose

Now you know how to measure your ring size. But before you start your shopping journey and find the right original ring, remember that there are many factors that can affect the correct measurement. Fingers swell during the day. This can be caused by high outside temperatures, air pressure changes, stress, alcohol consumption or heavy physical activity. For perfect results, it is better to repeat the measurement several times.

Ways to resize a ring

What if the ring doesn't fit? We can fix it as well. Remember, however, that ring sizing should not be done more than 3 times, because otherwise the jewellery may lose its quality. Almost all rings can be resized and it doesn't matter if you want to make the ring smaller or bigger. The process does not affect the design of the jewellery, so you will not see any changes. The only exception to this are eternity rings that are set with gemstones around the circumference – these pieces cannot be resized and will need to be newly created. If you can't get it right, don't despair! In our jewellery studio we will make your first ring resize free of charge. According to our terms and conditions, we have 14 working days to do it, but usually the whole process is quicker. Additional resize will be charged depending on the ring type and required size range.
