Peridot: Green gemstone of the sun that protects the aura

Are you planning to buy a gemstone jewellery but not sure what to choose? How about peridot? This beautiful mineral comes in various shades of green. Once considered a gift from Mother Nature, it now adorns original accessories and is often referred to as a stone that can protect its owner from evil spirits. Where does peridot come from, what are its properties and why should you choose peridot jewellery? Find out in this article!

What is peridot?

Peridot is a rhombic mineral that comes in a variety of chemical compositions. However, the most common form is a combination of magnesium and iron. The iron is responsible for the green colour of the gemstone. Depending on the percentage of each element, peridot can therefore range in colour from a pale yellow-green to a rich lime-green to a darker brown-green. According to some sources, to be perfect, peridot should contain less than 15% iron, along with the trace elements chromium and nickel.

In the jewellery industry, the gemstone is called peridot. And the lightest variety is also known as chrysolite, which is not very popular these days. Peridot has a few more nicknames, but these are more historical, so you'll come across them later in this article.

Origin and history of peridot

Peridot is formed deep in the Earth's mantle, crystallising from low silica magma during volcanic activity. As well as being found in basalts and gabbros (rocks formed from molten magma), this mineral is also found in meteorites.

The finest peridots used in jewellery come from the bottom of the Red Sea. Here, magma is poured directly into the seawater, cooling it rapidly and creating perfect structures. Often, however, peridot becomes part of lava flows, as in the USA, Vietnam or China. Other important deposits of larger minerals include Finland, Pakistan, Myanmar and Zabargad Island. However, it is not necessary to travel far to find peridots, as they can also be found in the Czech Republic, especially in the Kozákov region, or in Slovakia.

Symbolism and uses of peridot

Peridot is said to have many magical effects. It can bring its owner closer to nature. It can enhance feminine energy. And not only for women, it gives positive strength, increases self-confidence and brings peace to life. It helps quality and reduces anger or nervousness.

Peridot surrounds its wearer with vitality or optimism. It is said to attract luck, love and money, so it is often used as a talisman. It is also said to work well as a protective amulet.

The myths and legends of the peridot

Peridot has been known in many cultures. In ancient times it was considered a gift from Mother Nature. The ancient Egyptians called it the Stone of the Sun and believed it would protect its owner from evil spirits. The Romans called it Topazos, after the island where it was extracted. Because of its resemblance to emeralds, many historians have suggested that Cleopatra's jewels were not set with emeralds but with peridots. In the Middle Ages, crusaders thought that the peridot they found on the island of Zabargad was actually an emerald.

How do you wear jewellery made of peridot?

Despite its beauty, peridot is not recommended for everyday wear. Its hardness reaches 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, which means it is more susceptible to scratching or other damage. So if you are looking for an engagement ring or a non-traditional wedding band, for example, a diamond ring, a sapphire or moissanite ring would be a better choice.

On the other hand, peridot has unique advantages! Its playful, fresh green hues work well with both simple and elegant outfits, giving the wearer the right flair, as well as in original combinations with bold colours and unusual cuts. Used in the right way, peridot jewellery can be a great accessory for evening events as well as casual daytime wear.

How to care for peridot jewellery

Peridot, like any other gemstone, needs proper care. How to take care of jewellery, especially peridot jewellery? Do not expose the gemstone to heat or sudden changes in temperature. When storing peridot, make sure it does not touch other jewellery as this could scratch it. Peridot should not be cleaned with steam or ultrasonic cleaners. Do not use harsh chemicals for cleaning! For basic care, all you need is water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth for polishing.
